Abstract
EPA announced that an external review draft of the Integrated Science Assessment (ISA) for Lead (Pb) was made available for independent peer review and public comment. This draft ISA represents a concise synthesis and evaluation of the most policy-relevant science and will ultimately provide the scientific bases for EPA’s decision regarding whether the current standards for Pb sufficiently protect public health and the environment. As part of the current Lead (Pb) NAAQS review, EPA prepared this draft Pb Integrated Science Assessment (ISA) and released it for public comment and peer review by the Clean Air Scientific Advisory Committee (CASAC). This document is an external review draft for peer review purposes only. This information is distributed solely for the purpose of pre-dissemination peer review under applicable information quality guidelines. It has not been formally disseminated by the EPA. It does not represent, and should not be construed to represent, any Agency determination or policy. Mention of trade names or commercial products does not constitute endorsement or recommendation for use. This draft ISA consists of the Front Matter (list of authors, contributors, and reviewers), Executive Summary, Integrated Synthesis, and 12 appendices.
Impact/Purpose
EPA is preparing to release the External Review Draft of the Integrated Science Assessment (ISA) for Lead (Pb) for public comment and peer review. The Clean Air Act (CAA) requires the United States Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) to set National Ambient Air Quality Standards (NAAQS) for criteria air pollutants, including lead (Pb), that are considered harmful to public health and the environment, and to periodically review the science upon which the NAAQS are based. When final, the ISA will represent the Agency’s latest evaluation of the scientific literature on relationships between Pb exposure and health and welfare effects.Status
Following the external peer review the assessment will be finalized and posted on the EPA website.Citation
