Wildfire and Prescribed Burns EPA Research by Dr. Wayne Cascio
The presentation provides a concise review of the multitude of public health concerns voiced by public health and environmental health officials regarding wildfire smoke exposure and ORD’s efforts to address these concerns through problem formulation and solutions-driven research. Examples, of responsive research products are provided that include publicly available sources of air quality information, health information designed to protect the public especially those at highest risk from the adverse health effects of wildand fire smoke exposure. The Solutions-Driven Pilot project with the Missoula City and County Health Department and Hoopa Valley Reservation is described, as is the citizen science research project, Smoke Sense.
Impact/Purpose
The R-10 representatives will gain significant new awareness of ORD’s effort to develop research products that directly and effectively meet their needs related to wildfire smoke and its adverse effects on human health. This increased awareness will have numerous benefits. The R-10 representatives will be able to share this information with their state public health departments and will have a more comprehensive understanding of ORD’s commitment to Cooperative Federalism and providing relevant and useful products.Citation
