Challenges and recommendations on the conduct of systematic reviews of observational epidemiologic studies in environmental and occupational health

On this page:

Published systematic reviews and meta-analyses of environmental and occupational epidemiology studies have increased dramatically in recent years, aided by the creation and adoption of new methodologies to standardize the review process. However, the quality and utility of published reviews has been variable. Most methodologies were adapted from clinical epidemiology and have not been adequately modified to evaluate observational studies of environmental and occupational epidemiology.

Impact/Purpose

In this commentary, we discuss the challenges of conducting systematic reviews of observational studies of environmental and occupational health, and of adapting clinical review methods to these study types. Additionally, we offer recommendations for conducting and reporting a cohesive systematic review using examples from the literature.
