Abstract

A synthesis of available literature on uncertainty (safety) factors which are used to estimate acceptable daily intakes (ADIs) for toxicants is presented. The synthesis reveals reasonable qualitative biological premises, as well as specific biological data that support both the use and choice of these factors. A suggestion is made in order to derive a range of ADI. Research needs in various areas of uncertainty are also identified.
