Use of Epidemiology Studies in Risk Assessment- A Course Presentation

On this page:

  • Overview
The presentation will introduce the use of epidemiological information in risk assessment and will discuss uncertainties related to measures of association for specific study designs. Types of bias will be defined, as well as the potential impact they may have on the magnitude and direction of study results. Other factors that influence the sensitivity of a study to detect an association between a chemical exposure and health effect also will be discussed. The presentation will progress to a description of the process used in the IRIS program to evaluate individual studies and synthesize across study results to contribute to an analysis of causality.

Impact/Purpose

Barbara Glenn will be a guest lecturer for a graduate level class on environmental risk assessment and management at Georgetown University on Monday, February 25, 2019. Dr. Glenn will describe and interpret the measures used by epidemiological studies of environmental and occupational exposures. She also will describe uncertainties resulting from sources of bias and other factors and demonstrate using examples of how uncertainties can be accounted for when synthesizing evidence and drawing conclusions about causality.
