EPA Research to Protect Coastal Ecosystems and Communities

PESD’s Pacific Coastal Ecology Branch (PCEB) will showcase examples of current research in a virtual exhibit at the Hatfield Marine Science Center’s Marine Science Day (MSD) n April 10, 2021. MSD is an annual open house showcasing scientific research being conducted at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) in Newport, OR. Oregon State University (OSU) hosts MSD and invites all university and State and Federal agency laboratories on the HMSC campus to participate by producing exhibits of their current research. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s MSD will be virtual, and OSU is hosting the website that will present all of the digital exhibits. PCEB’s exhibit will feature five presentations containing previously cleared materials as follows: 1) an overview of the PESD’s coastal research and the Newport facility, 2) water quality research on nutrient and bacteria source tracking, 3) water quality research using geophysics tools to track contaminated groundwater, 3) ecosystem services research on the benefits from nature of coastal ecosystems, 4) climate research focusing on identifying causes of acidification in estuaries, and 5) a day in the life of an EPA scientist to inspire younger viewers to consider careers in research with EPA.

Impact/Purpose

PESD’s Pacific Coastal Ecology Branch in Newport, OR, has prepared a presentation of their current research for this year’s Hatfield Marine Science Center’s Marine Science Day (April 10, 2021). Oregon State University, which hosts the HMSC Marine Science Day, invites all university, state and federal laboratories on the HMSC campus to prepare exhibits for the general public to showcase current research. Due to the pandemic, this year’s Marine Science Day will be virtual and hosted by OSU. PESD’s exhibit will feature five presentations of previously cleared information, combined in here into one omnibus slide deck, including 1) an overview of the PESD’s coastal research and the Newport facility, 2) water quality research on nutrient and bacteria source tracking, 3) water quality research using geophysics tools to track contaminated groundwater, 3) ecosystem services research on the benefits from nature of coastal ecosystems, 4) climate research focusing on identifying causes of acidification in estuaries, and 5) a day in the life of an EPA scientist to inspire younger viewers to consider careers in research with EPA.
