Connecting Assessment Needs to HERA Research

The Health and Environmental Risk Assessment (HERA) Program is focused on advancing the understanding of the effects that exposure to pollutants have on key biological, chemical, and physical processes that affect human health. The Office of Research and Development developed a structured process for identifying products consistent with the vision and objectives of the HERA strategic plan and developed to meet the partner and assessment needs of the program. In order to continue to deliver the high quality, transparent, scientifically defensible assessments that are the hallmark of the HERA Program, data and methodological gaps identified throughout the assessment process are the focus of research in the program.

Impact/Purpose

Introductory presentation of the Health and Environmental Risk Assessment to the Board of Scientific Counselors (BOSC), focusing on the process for identifying and delivering products. The BOSC reviewed the implementation of research being conducted in the areas of new approach methodologies (NAMs), systematic review, and dose-response modeling. The presentation clarifies the connected nature of the program and how research products are developed to support partners as well as assessments developed within the HERA program.
