Webinar on diatom metric development

On this page:

  • Overview
Diatom data from Colorado Department of Public Health and Evironment and from Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality will be used to develop metrics to support state progress towards development or revision of biological and nutrient criteria. New USGS/EPA regional metrics will be tested for their performance and applicability to state-level datasets.

Impact/Purpose

This is a webinar presentation on applying a national multi-metric index (MMI) of diatom biological condition to a state dataset. The webinar will describe what is an MMI and how the national MMI resolves a number of methodological issues that have limited the adoption of diatoms in assessment programs. In addition, the webinar will walk through an example of applying the MMI using an R Shiny web application to Colorado's diatom dataset. The webinar will show how users may input their own diatom data to calculate MMI scores to assess stream biological condition.
