Flooding and Other Disasters: Risk and Resilience in Rural North Carolina

On this page:

  • Overview
This project aims to create interactive story maps that highlight local flood risk as well as possible community assets and vulnerabilities in Robeson County and the surrounding area. Story maps will be based in EPA’s Enviro Atlas with geospatial data pooled from local, state, and federal databases. Further, this study aims to link mid to long-term health consequences to historic flood events by using the UNC medical records database. Our project team will consist of expert environmental epidemiologist researchers, communications experts, and social scientists. We also seek to include willing community members from Robeson County to the project team. The end goals of this project are to generate maps and tools to help local communities better assess their elements of risk and resilience during prominent storm events. Local authorities and emergency planners can use these tools to better prepare for future events. Additionally, manuscripts linking mid to long-term health outcomes with prominent storm events should add to the broader literature and may improve understanding about the sequence of storm events.

Impact/Purpose

The goal of this project is to identify community impacts to flooding. We hope to use this research to create a visual data tool, perhaps a Story Map, for the community to plan, prepare for, and respond to future hurricane and flooding events. This presentation will be delivered to the Lumbee Tribe Health Committee as we hope to recruit Lumbee participants.
