Environmental Exposures and Kidney Disease

On this page:

  • Overview
  • Downloads
Humans interface daily with the environment. There is growing evidence that components of the environment affect the health of individuals and communities, including kidney disease. This paper gives an overview of the current state of the research on environmental exposures and kidney disease, including research gaps.

Impact/Purpose

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a costly, prevalent, and often debilitating illness in the United States. Increasingly, research has been conducted into examining associations between CKD and environmental exposures. This paper gives an overview of the current state of the science on environmental exposures, including air pollutants, water pollutants, pesticides, and extreme weather on CKD. This paper also details cutting-edge methods to assess these associations, including "omic" and environment-wide association studies, as well as gaps in the literature and future directions.
