Semantic Integration of US Federal Nanomaterials Data - Open Source Software FCSM Conference Session Invitation 10/22/2024

On this page:

  • Overview
Dr. Chris Marcum, Senior Statistician and Senior Scientist from the Office of the Chief Statistician of the United States has organized a symposium entitled "Open Source Software in the Federal Statistical System" accepted by the Federal Committee on Statistical Methodology Annual Conference Program. Program is as follows: Holly Mortensen from EPA will discuss the nanoEHS NaKnowBase/OntoSearcher David Oh will discuss his BLS project using OS to categorize and analyze a survey of occupational injuries and illnesses Tod Dabolt will discuss the FAIRness Project Remy DeCausemaker will discuss the CMS OSPO And our Discussant will be Ken Haase from Census

Impact/Purpose

Dr. Holly Mortensen, will discuss the efforts of the EPA, in conjunction with other U.S. and EU partners to establish community-driven best practices, and support common infrastructure to connect data resources. Dr. Mortensen will highlight EPA efforts with NaKnowBase [Boyes, 2022] and ongoing work to address the interoperability of U.S. federal agency nanomaterials data [Mortensen, 2024] semantic mapping efforts that leverage existing ontologies in order to break down federal data silos and promote FAIR data standards for nanoEHS. Dr. Mortensen will discussed what she referred to as the “nomenclature debacle” for nanomaterials, EPA’s efforts to use Natural Language Processing (NLP) to develop and EPA-specific nomenclature for nanoEHS, and the current data storage and interoperability needs. Dr. Mortensen will discuss graph databases, specifically the Resource Description Framework (RDF), and how this format may address heterogeneity and interpolation issues inherent to nano data. Dr. Mortensen will discuss the RDF mapping of the EPA Adverse Outcome Pathway Database (AOP-DB) and the EPA NaKnowBase, and the EPA Ontosearcher tool, [6]; https://catalog.data.gov/dataset/naknowbase-interoperability-tools. She discussed these semantic mapping efforts and tools in relation to the collaborative efforts of the NNI DIG, and agency partners to implement the use of these EPA tools to expedite processing, and manual curation, and move toward a shared data environment.
