Monitoring and Assessment in a Changing World

On this page:

  • Overview
Monitoring and assessment is essential (1) to evaluate progress in meeting goals put into place to protect aquatic resources and (2) to respond and detect changes in the environment due to anthropogenic pressures, climate change, and other unforeseen stressors.  In this Plenary presentation, Dr. Amanda M. Nahlik (U.S. EPA, ORD, CPHEA, PESD) discusses historical monitoring approaches used to address large-scale issues in the United States and the current National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS) Program.  Using examples from the National Wetland Condition Assessment (NWCA), benefits of implementing long-term, large-scale monitoring on a global level are discussed.

Impact/Purpose

This presentation is for the Opening Plenary of the 2024 Society of Wetland Scientists Meeting in Taipei, Taiwan.  Dr. Nahlik will be presenting about the National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS) Program, using wetland examples, to connect to an international audience in hopes to spark idea development and discussion about global monitoring and assessment.
