Timely Delivery of Scientific Knowledge for Environmental Management: A Freshwater Science Initiative

In the coming months, FWS will begin to encourage authors who are submitting papers to enter metadata associated with their methods and results. As researchers, we all have a vested interest in seeing our research applied, and we are best placed to accurately enter our results and metadata into the database. As this initiative develops, we will be actively seeking feedback from submitting authors about the fields requested, and whether fewer, different, or additional fields are required. Our initiative is currently focused on papers that explicitly demonstrate relationships between two or more variables, but the concept could easily extend to other types of results (e.g., temporal trends in a single variable).

Impact/Purpose

The authors of this editorial have been working with Freshwater Science (FWS) leadership and staff on an initiative to proactively involve the FWS research community in the effort to increase the accessibility of our research results for environmental management and policy applications. The objective of this initiative is to facilitate the inclusion of FWS-published research results in results databases that support systematic literature assessments.
