The Office of Drinking Water, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, has prepared a "Drinking Water Criteria Document on Legionella". The document includes an extensive review of the following topics: general information and properties, occurrence in drinking water, worldwide distribution, analytical methodology, health effects in animals and humans, symptoms and mechanisms of disease production, control of legionellae in the distribution system and in plumbing systems, and risk assessment.
