Abstract

EPA announced the release of the final report, Toxicological Review of Naphthalene: in support of the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS). The updated Summary for Naphthalene and accompanying toxicological review have been added to the IRIS Database.
Naphthalene is produced by distillation and fractionation of either petroleum or coal tar. Naphthalene’s principal use is as an intermediate in the production of phthalic anhydride.

Impact/Purpose

Naphthalene is produced by distillation and fractionation of either petroleum or coal tar. Naphthalene’s principal use is as an intermediate in the production of phthalic anhydride. Phthalic anhydride is important in the manufacture of phthalate plasticizers, resins, dyes, and insect repellents. Naphthalene is also used in the manufacture of synthetic leather tanning agents and the insecticide carbaryl. Naphthalene has been used as a moth repellent and as a deodorizer for diaper pails and toilets

History/Chronology

Date Description
01- July 2004 EPA released the draft report for external peer review.
02- August 1998 EPA released the final tox report and summary document and posted these to the IRIS database.
