"Waterborne Infection Risk Evaluation (WIRE) :Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, September 2017"

On this page:

  • Overview
Salivary antibody responses may serve as a marker of prior, recent or current infection. We collected and tested saliva samples for evidence of potential infection to several potentially waterborne and other common infections among 301 residents of the Choctaw Nation. Results indicated Choctaw Nation Festival attendees tested had higher seropositivity compared to residents of the Midwest United States associated with the following pathogens: Norovirus Cryptosporidium Helicobacter pylori Cytomegalovirus These results indicate residents of Choctaw Nation may be more frequently exposed to these pathogens than Midwest residents

Impact/Purpose

We used a multiplex salivary immunoassay to study prevalence of waterborne infections among 301 attendees at the Choctaw Labor Day Festival in 2017. Results indicate residents of Choctaw Nation may be frequently exposed to some these waterborne pathogens
