Abstract
EPA conducted a peer review of the scientific basis supporting the human health hazard and dose-response assessment of chlordecone that will appear on the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) database. The draft Toxicological Review of chlordecone provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to subchronic and chronic exposure to chlordecone. Chlordecone is a chlorinated pesticide which before the cancelation of its production and use in the late 1970s was used primarily as an insecticide to control slugs, snails and fire ants. Chlordecone has been found at hazardous waste sites and is also a degradation product of the pesticide Mirex in the environment. Chlordecone was nominated for evaluation by the Superfund Technical Support Center.
This assessment contains the derivation of an oral reference dose for chronic exposure and a qualitative evaluation of suggestive carcinogenic potential.
Impact/Purpose
EPA is announcing a public comment period for the external review draft human health hazard and dose-response assessment of chlordecone that will appear on the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) databaseStatus
Following External Peer Review, the final assessment is scheduled to be posted to the IRIS database.Citation
