NCEA RELEASING TWO DRAFT ASSESSMENTS ON THE POTENTIAL IMPACT OF CLIMATE CHANGE ON WATER QUALITY
On this page:
NCEA has released for External Review two draft assessments: “A Screening Assessment of the Potential Impacts of Climate Change on Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Mitigation in the Great Lakes and New England Regions” and “A Screening Assessment of the Potential Impacts of Climate Change on the Costs of Implementing Water Quality-Based Effluent Limits at Publicly-Owned Treatment Works in the Great Lakes Region”.
As climate changes it is expected that many parts of the country will experience increases in the proportion of rainfall occurring in high intensity events. These changes present a risk of increased CSO frequency and water quality impairment. The first report describes the extent to which CSO long-term control plans may be under-designed if planners assume that past precipitation conditions are representative of future conditions. At the same time, a shift towards more intense storms and longer interceding dry spells could reduce the volume of dilution flow between events. The second report describes the potential impacts of climate change on the cost of meeting water quality based effluent limits at POTWs discharging to rivers and streams in the Great Lakes Region (GLR).
