EPA is releasing the final document, Report on the Environmental Indicators: An Uncertainty and Scaling Pilot Study. A draft version of this report underwent independent, external peer review.

Abstract

This final report provides an analysis of uncertainty and scaling for seven of the Report on the Environment (ROE) indicators.
The purpose of the ROE is to provide a reliable set of indicators for year-to-year comparisons and to inform Agency planning and decision-making, making the treatment of uncertainty critical. This report may inform the future development of the ROE and other indicators used by the Agency with respect to quantifying uncertainty and scaling national-level environmental data to local levels.

The following seven indicators were included in the pilot study:
  • ambient concentrations of particulate matter
  • coastal sediment quality
  • population served by community water systems with no reported violations of health-based standards
  • toxic chemicals in production-related wastes combusted for energy recovery, released, treated, or recycled
  • migration of contaminated ground water under control at high-priority cleanup sites
  • blood lead-level
  • fish faunal intactness
