Abstract

EPA released the draft toxicological review for public comment under the Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) Program. The original draft assessment (January 2009) has been archived but is available on this web page for the sake of transparency.
EPA began an assessment of the potential human health effects of halogenated platinum salts in order to address questions focused on the use of a platinum fuel additive in some clean diesel projects under the Diesel Emission Reduction Act.

Impact/Purpose

The draft Toxicological Review of halogenated Pt salts and Pt compounds provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic exposure to halogenated Pt salts and Pt compounds. The two major uses of Pt compounds are in jewelry and in automotive emission control catalysts (catalytic converters). Evidence suggests that vehicles equipped with catalytic converters represent a significant source of Pt in ambient air, especially in areas heavily populated with automotive vehicles. Use of Pt compounds as fuel-borne catalysts in diesel fuel vehicles presents another potential source of environmental Pt. This assessment contains the derivation of a chronic reference concentration.

Status

EPA has removed the platinum fuel additive from the list of registered additives for use in on-road diesel vehicles. Because of this, the Agency no longer has a need for the IRIS assessment of halogenated platinum salts.
