Abstract

On September 29, 2009, the IRIS Summary and Toxicological Review of Cerium Oxide and Cerium Compounds was finalized and loaded onto the IRIS database. The Toxicological Review of Cerium Oxide and Cerium Compounds was reviewed internally by EPA, by other federal agencies and White House Offices, by expert external peer reviewers, and by the public. In the new IRIS process, introduced by the EPA Administrator, all written comments on IRIS assessments submitted by other federal agencies and White House Offices will be made publicly available. Accordingly, interagency comments and the interagency draft of the Cerium Oxide and Cerium Compounds IRIS assessment are posted on this site.
The draft Toxicological Review of Cerium Oxide and Cerium Compounds provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard identification and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic exposure to cerium oxide and cerium compounds. In addition to serving as a fuel-borne additive, cerium is used as a polishing agent for glass mirrors, plate glass, television tubes, ophthalmic lenses, and precision optics; as a glass constituent to prevent solarization and discoloration; and as a catalyst for automobile emission control systems. The Office of Air and Radiation (OAR), Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ), has received applications for the registration of fuel-borne additives containing cerium.

This assessment contains the derivation of a chronic reference concentration, as well as a cancer characterization.

Impact/Purpose

The draft Toxicological Review of Cerium Oxide and Cerium Compounds provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard identification and dose-response assessment pertaining to chronic exposure to cerium oxide and cerium compounds.

Status

The assessment has been finalized and loaded onto the IRIS database.
