Exposure versus internal dose: Respiratory tract deposition modeling of inhaled asbestos fibers in rats and humans (Presentation Poster)

Exposure to asbestos is associated with respiratory diseases, including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma. Internal fiber dose depends on fiber inhalability and orientation, fiber density, length and width, and various deposition mechanisms (DM). Species-specific parameters such as airway architecture and ventilation rate effect the efficiencies of DM in each respiratory tract region. Prediction of internal fiber dose with a dosimetry model aids translation of internal dose across species to human equivalent exposures and evaluation of risk for various biological endpoints. A dosimetry model to calculate deposited fractions (DF) in the upper and lower respiratory tract (URT and LRT) is presented as the first step to a more comprehensive dosimetry model.
