Subsequent to this consulation, the Agency twice revised the draft framework, and in 2003 published the final Framework for Cumulative Risk Assessment

Abstract

This report presents information and materials from a peer consultation workshop organized by Versar, Inc. (an EPA contractor) for EPA's Risk Assessment Forum. The meeting was held in Washington, DC on August 22 and 23, 2001. The meeting discussions focused on the August 2, 2001 draft Framework for Cumulative Risk Assessment. These discussions are part of EPA's ongoing efforts to identify issues that will be addressed during the cumulative risk assessment guidance development process.

The EPA Science Policy Council has asked the Risk Assessment Forum (RAF) to begin developing Agency-wide cumulative risk assessment guidance that builds from the Agency's ongoing activities. As a first step, a technical panel convened under the RAF has been working to develop a Framework for Cumulative Risk Assessment. Building from the Agency's growing experiences, this framework is intended to identify the basic elements of the cumulative risk assessment process. It should provide a flexible structure for the technical issues and define key terms associated with cumulative risk assessment.

The peer consultation workshop described in this summary report had two primary purposes. First, it provided interested stakeholders with an opportunity to see an early draft of the Framework for Cumulative Risk Assessment. Second, it afforded the RAF an opportunity to obtain early input from these stakeholders that will assist with further development of the draft Framework. The workshop discussions focused on the technical issues associated with the August 2, 2001 draft of the Framework.
