Geophysical tools for on-scene coordinators: practical non-intrusive applications to assess and characterize the subsurface

Field geophysical methods and techniques can aid On-Scene Coordinators (OSCs) in their challenging site investigative tasks. This presentation showcases the various geophysical methods such as electromagnetic induction, ground penetrating radar, electrical resistivity imaging, and fiber optic distributed temperature sensing to aid OSCs in contaminated site investigations. The content also includes practical examples, cutting edge research on new applications, and online resources to guide OSCs.

Impact/Purpose

EPA Region 7 hosts an annual weekly training for On-Scene-Coordinators (OSCs) covering health and safety, best practices, site investigation tools, approaches, and state of the science or technology updates. This presentation provides a broad state of the science of geophysics for OSCs. The presentation covers potential geophysical methods and tools for objectives relevant for OSCs such as locating subsurface objects, mapping contaminant plumes, monitoring remediation, ground water – surface water interactions, and online resources. This content will be presented remotely via Skype to Region 7 and State personnel on Thursday, January 16, 2020.
