Overview of the public health impacts of wildfires
Wildfires have various impacts on water quality and air quality—which can ultimately impact public health. US EPA’s Office of Research and Development (ORD) has a diverse and robust wildfire and public health research portfolio. ORD research on water impacts of wildfire and wildfire smoke is emerging; and years of air quality and public health research serves as a solid foundation for ongoing investigation of the emissions, modeling, toxicology, epidemiology, and efficacy of health risk communication and outreach strategies. This presentation will provide an overview of the various public health impacts from wildfires, setting the stage for presentations about ORD research activities as well as presentations on the ways this work has informed regional, state, tribal, and local activities.
