National Estuary Program Ocean and Coastal Acidification Meeting

On this page:

  • Overview
The Office of Water is hosting a workshop focused on coastal acidification monitoring within National Estuary Program sites.  The purpose of this meeting is to facilitate information sharing with the NEPs and their partners that are conducting coastal acidification monitoring.  Topics covered in the workshop include methods used, issues encountered and approaches to address them, and opportunities for collaboration.  ORD scientists will be participating in the workshop and presenting overviews of coastal acidification research being conducted, including identifying global and local drivers of acidification in Tillamook Estuary (Oregon), assessing vulnerability to acidification in US estuaries, and incorporating a coastal acidification indicator into the National Coastal Condition Assessment Survey.

Impact/Purpose

Coastal communities are experiencing economic impacts of coastal acidification, particularly the shellfish industry.  There is the need for high-quality carbonate chemistry data in estuaries to inform management decisions and the development of adaptation strategies.  The Office of Water is hosting a workshop focused on coastal acidification monitoring within National Estuary Program sites.
