Using Science to Inform Policy
This presentation covers how science can be used to inform public health policy decisions. It includes several examples, with a focus on the EPA's National Ambient Air Quality Standards program. Slides include background information on the EPA and relevant environmental statutes, an overview of the EPA's process for reviewing National Ambient Air Quality Standards, an overview of the science available to inform the most recent review of the primary PM2.5 standards, and a summary of the EPA's 2020 decision to retain those standards. This information provides an example of how the EPA can use scientific research and technical analyses to inform regulatory decisions that affect public health. This presentation will be delivered as part of an invited lecture to undergraduate students at Furman University.
