EPA Summary: Forecasting Forecasting Challenges and Opportunities
Forecasting for water quantity and quality is critically important for managing our nation's surface waters, enabling a better understanding of how surface waters change in response to pollution and how to protect them. Emerging environmental challenges require high-quality, interoperable, multiscale water data that can be applied rapidly and efficiently to meet the needs of decision-makers. Integrated modeling is needed to provide the basis for understanding and addressing complex water resource challenges, enhancing national capability for prediction and scenario building.
Impact/Purpose
The interrelated challenges of impaired watersheds and water quality collectively threaten the Nation’s water resources that support human and ecosystem health and a strong economy. Advances in water mapping and analytics and innovations in integrated modeling will support operational adaptability and inform dynamic decision-making.Citation
