Studies on the interaction of chemical with cyanobacteria studied by spectral flow cytometry. Chemicals used to remove potentially harmful cyanobacterial species from drinking water requires rapid verification that the water is free from the organisms and their toxins. Laboratory studies on Microcystis aeruginosa, a producer of microcystin-LR, were made using the Cytek Aurora spectral flow cytometer after treatment with H2O2, CuSO4 and KMnO4. The chemicals were added at different concentrations and the Microcystis was analyzed for spectral changes after 0, 1, 2, and 7 days to document the initial chemical toxicity and cellular death.

Impact/Purpose

Chemicals used to remove potentially harmful cyanobacterial species from drinking water requires rapid verification that the water is free from the organisms and their toxins. Studies measure the interaction of water purification chemicals with cyanobacteria.
