Abstract
In August 2024, EPA finalized the IRIS Toxicological Review of Formaldehyde (Inhalation). The Toxicological Review was reviewed internally by EPA and by other federal agencies and White House Offices before public release. Consistent with the May 2009 IRIS assessment development process, all written comments on IRIS assessments submitted by other federal agencies and White House Offices are made publicly available on this site.Formaldehyde is present in a variety of products including plywood adhesives, abrasive materials, insulation, pesticides, and embalming fluids. Major sources of anthropogenic emissions include household furnishings and building materials, motor vehicle exhaust, manufacturing plants that produce or use formaldehyde or substances that contain it (e.g., glues), and tobacco smoke.
Impact/Purpose
The IRIS Toxicological Review of Formaldehyde (Inhalation) provides scientific support and rationale for the hazard and dose-response assessment pertaining to inhalation exposure to formaldehyde.Status
Now that the interagency review draft has been completed and finalized, the final formaldehyde assessment has been published on the IRIS Web site and the toxicity values added to the IRIS Database.Citation
