Computational Models for Risk Assessment of Inhaled Aerosols: History and Conceptual Basis

As an introduction to computational modeling for inhaled aerosols, this presentation provides the history and conceptual basis for particle dosimetry modeling and its role in exposure aligment for risk assessment and experimental design.  Specific topics include the history and conceptual basis, the evolution of EPA particle dosimetry models, customization options, future directions and research needs.

Impact/Purpose

Provide an invited two-part (this slide deck is part 1) training session on how to use the EPA MPPD dosimetry model for interspecies extrapolation to inhalation toxicology trainees and other attendees of the 13th International Particulate Toxicology Conference.  Part 1 of the training session provides the conceptual basis and foundational understanding of particle dosimetry modeling to appreciate its role in risk assessment and experimental design as preparation for the student activity practicum in which the MPPD model will be applied.  The IPTC is one of the longest standing scientific meetings in its field. It started in the UK in 1979 and has since been held 11 times, rotating between continents. The 2022 conference is the 13th.  This conference is a meeting place of thought leaders, research directors and emerging stars in the many different fields of particle and fiber toxicology. It is a place where new ideas are discussed and cultivated, and where new initiatives are conceived and launched.  The organizers specifically felt that there has been insufficient appreciation of the role of dosimetry in both experimental design and evidence integration.
