Cyanobacteria Assessment Network: Bloom Monitoring in US Lakes

On this page:

  • Overview
The Cyanobacteria Assessment Network is an interagency project collaboration between US EPA, NASA, NOAA, and USGS. The project aims to advance the science of detecting and monitoring cyanobacteria blooms in lakes across the US using satellite imagery from the MERIS and Sentinel 3 missions. This presentation will cover: (1) An overview of the CyAN project goals, (2) the formulation and validation of the Cyanobacteria Index algorithm, (3) use of CyAN data in bloom monitoring and research, and (4) demonstration of the public CyAN web application.

Impact/Purpose

Idaho Department of Environmental Quality requested PESD’s Amalia Handler to virtually present an overview of the Cyanobacteria Assessment Network’s satellite data on cyanobacteria in lakes.  Idaho DEQ requested the presentation for their surface water staff to learn more about remote sensing as an additional tool for waterbody monitoring and managment. The presentation will cover the satellite missions collecting spectral data required for cyanobacteria detections, algorithm development and approach, validation studies, and use cases for state monitoring. The goal of the presentation is to provide ID DEQ surface water staff with the technical information about CyAN, an overview of how CyAN can be used for monitoring, and give staff the opportunity to get their questions about the data answered.
