This presentation gives an overview and update on EPA ORD’s HABs research since the last USACE Interagency workshop on Freshwater HABs. The legislative drivers related to freshwater HABs are explained. The research discussed provides stakeholders and decision-makers at the national, regional, state, tribal and local levels with scientific information and tools to assess and manage HABs and associated toxicity events more effectively. Output 4.1 Data and tools to assess human and environmental adverse health outcomes from exposure to HABs and associated toxins are discussed. Research under this output investigates toxicity from exposure to cyanotoxins by assessing potential impacts using multiple whole organism toxicity studies, in vitro cell, and tissue model approaches. Health effects of acute oral microcystin exposure in mice and the effects of cyanobacteria on human 3D skin tissue models are discussed. Output 4.2 Information for mitigating the impact of HABs in source water and drinking water covers a variety of treatment techniques. Through a combination of bench-, pilot-, and potentially field-scale trials, research under this output investigates a range of strategies to prevent and manage HABs. These strategies may include in situ bloom treatment techniques and the optimization of drinking water treatment process designs and operational practices. Output 4.3 Tools for HAB risk characterization and assessment covers research that aims to improve HAB assessment through advancing new technologies for monitoring, developing tools, and characterizing HAB biomass and toxins, vulnerability, and potential early indicators. In addition, an overview of the research goals and objectives in the FY23-26 research plan is given.
