Water Quality and Emissions

On this page:

  • Overview
The National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS) program has been monitoring water chemistry and reporting on the condition of water quality for over 15 years.  These data may be of particular interest to efforts to construct natural capital accounts, such as those being conducted by the Interagency Technical Working Group (ITWG) on Developing an Environmental-Economic Accounting Classification.  This 3-minute brief introduces NARS and some of the most relevant water chemistry data available to the ITWG.

Impact/Purpose

Interagency Technical Working Group (ITWG) on Developing an Environmental-Economic Accounting Classification, Water Sub-Group (June 25th 2024) Webinar. Amanda Nahlik will present on EPA’s work that could contribute to the effort to develop an environmental-economic accounting classification system associated with water measurements (quality and quantity) and the contribution of water to the national economy over time.  The presentation is shared with Joel Corona (Office of Policy) and Wesley Ingwersen (ORD-CESER). The team will brief the working group on NARS and other EPA datasets, such as the National Nutrient Inventory and Standardized Emission and Waste Inventories, among others, that may be relevant to developing water accounts.
