Per Crisfield's request, this presentation is a research status briefing summarizing nature-based solutions recommendations for the Crisfield Standing Coordination Call.  The goal is to describe research to date identifying nature-based solutions for coastal resilience identifying strategies and specific on-the-ground projects to help Crisfield attenuation storm surge and waves and prevent erosion.  Results summarize potentially effective strategies appropriate for Crisfield's environmental conditions developed from a literature review and preliminary analysis of options successful at providing coastal resilience in areas with similar characteristics to Crisfield, as well as assessing co-benefits in alignment with Crisfield's values and preferences.  Meeting attendees will integrate EPA ORD's NBS research with other ongoing efforts on the part of FEMA, US Army Corps, and other state and local efforts to help Crisfield work towards achieving their overall resilience goals.

Impact/Purpose

The goal of this research is to increase the consideration and adoption by coastal communities of nature-based climate adaptation strategies that build coastal resilience and maximize ecosystem service co-benefits including blue carbon sequestration.   This project co-develops research, outreach, and education with the community of Crisfield to help the community consider nature-based strategies in their coastal and community resilience planning, help the community maximize the benefits they value that can be provided by nature-based strategies, and help the community develop the capacity to be able to implement nature-based strategies.
