Leveraging Multimedia PFAS Exposure Data to Understand Important Residential Sources and Pathways

On this page:

  • Overview
The ubiquitous presence of PFAS in national biomonitoring surveys suggests a range of exposure sources and pathways.  PFAS may be present in and released from a vast number of building materials and consumer products in residential environments. Data and modeling analyses are required to characterize important residential sources, transport among outdoor and indoor media, and important human exposure pathways.  Currently, USEPA and partners are conducting research to measure PFAS occurrence in environmental and biological media.  Emerging data on exposure pathways are being collated to elucidate exposure-based groupings of PFAS and support decisions that protect highly exposed and vulnerable groups.

Impact/Purpose

Information on PFAS exposure pathways in the indoor environment is increasing. Data on parameters required to model partitioning of PFAS among indoor media and to estimate uptake of PFAS through the inhalation and dermal routes remain sparse. Identifying exposure-based groupings of PFAS will enable prioritization of critical data gaps and implementation of effective actions to mitigate exposure.
