SJU Seminar - PFAS - emerging compounds and mixture effects in developmental toxicity studies

On this page:

  • Overview
This is a slide deck for an invited presentation at the St. John’s University Department of Pharmacology Program in Toxicology.  Our research group has conducted developmental toxicity studies on emerging PFAS with little to no available toxicity data for comparison to well-studied compounds and leveraged these into studies on the combined effects of PFAS mixtures.  This presentation will be an overview of major findings from our research program.

Impact/Purpose

The studies described here are some of the only mammalian studies for several emerging PFAS that have documented human exposure, either via drinking water or human serum detections.  Further, the in vivo mixture toxicity studies are the only in vivo PFAS mixture studies in the literature to statistically evaluate the adequacy of various mixture models for predicting combined effects.  The results directly support the proposed approaches by the Office of Water, as well as state and international health-based agencies that have adopted mixture-based risk assessment and regulatory approaches for exposure to multiple PFAS.
