A perspective from U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) scientists: how your epidemiologic analyses can inform human health risk assessment

On this page:

  • Overview
Environmental epidemiologists strive to improve public health outcomes through their research. Risk assessment is the link between research and policy. Risk assessment requires specific information that may not be routinely reported, which may hinder research translation. This presentation will help bridge the divide between the epidemiology research community and the risk assessment community by 1) providing an example of part of the risk assessment process as operationalized within one program at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and 2) sharing suggestions for reporting and modeling results from epidemiologic analyses to facilitate their use in assessments that inform policy decisions.

Impact/Purpose

The purpose of this presentation will be to bridge the divide between the academic epidemiology community and the EPA risk assessment community by 1) providing an overview of dose-response assessment processes within the EPA Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) program, and 2) providing suggestions for reporting and analysis of epidemiological studies to improve their ability to be effectively incorporated into the dose-response process.
