Hispanic Organization of Toxicologists Risk Management: RATE Module CCM-501

The objective of this course is to provide participants with a brief review of the first three steps in the risk assessment paradigm (hazard identification, dose-response assessment, and exposure assessment) as well as a thorough overview of the fourth step, risk characterization.  Specifically, this course will focus on how risk characterization integrates scientific information into qualitative and quantitative estimates of the likelihood of any hazards associated with the toxicant of concern occurring in potentially exposed populations. The process of organizing, evaluating, and communicating information regarding the nature and magnitude of health effects associated with the toxicant of concern will be covered.  The role of uncertainty analysis regarding risk estimates, science policy decisions, and how scientific decisions are used in context with other information (economics, social values, public perception, etc.) will also be covered.

Impact/Purpose

This presentation will be part of a training event associated with an Embassy Science Fellowship in Peru. Although the presentation is targeted to this audience, many of the updates provided here will be useful for a required sub-product which is an update to RATE Training Module CCM-501.
