Taiwan 2024 - CCM501: Risk Characterization

On this page:

  • Overview
In this course, we will talk about the process of risk assessment in the context of the four components of risk assessment recognized by the National Research Council (NRC) and the U.S. EPA.  We will then discuss how those components are applied to human health risk assessment as conducted by the U.S. EPA.  We will review the components of risk assessment in the context a case study for the Warynski Smelter Site. Throughout these examples, we will review the types of data and information that are used in the process of risk assessment, and discuss the benefits and limitations of the risk assessment process in environmental and public health decision making.

Impact/Purpose

This presentation provides a basic overview of how risks are characterized by the US EPA as of 2024. Providing an overview such as this is important to help train staff in the Agency as well as partner organizations, and to inform stakeholders on the processes the Agency uses to help inform regulatory decisions.
