The Crisfield Resilience Academy is a six-session environmental education initiative in the community of and near Crisfield, Maryland. The Academy focuses on resilience to flooding in the area. Session 4 specifically addresses nature-based strategies to mitigate coastal flooding. The attached flyer will be a handout that is distributed to Academy participants during Session 4 and guide a discussion during the session around local solutions. The information in the flyer was developed with the assistance of EPA staff and contractors with topic-area expertise from TetraTech.

Impact/Purpose

The NBS flyer is designed to address coastal flooding in the Crisfield, MD area and surrounding community. Flooding has many impacts on environmental and human health, including, but not limited to: threatening lives, inundating properties and businesses, destroying belongings, damaging vital infrastructure and preventing access to essential public services, not to mention long-term impacts associated with exposure to floodwaters, mold, and alterations to drinking water quality in the area.   The NBS flyer will be shared during Session 4 of the Crisfield Resilience Academy participants, all of whom are participating in the environmental education social science study. Participants' levels of knowledge surrounding nature-based solutions will be evaluated with pre- and-post surveys. Results should be available in early May, 2025.   The long term importance and significance of the findings will be helpful for informing on-the-ground decisions that must be made in Crisfield and Somerset County by a well-informed citizenry. At the root of the Crisfield Resilience Academy is a goal to increase knowledge on the issue among participants.   Our local partners on the ground (City of Crisfield, community members in the Somerset County area) would be interested in the larger results of the Crisfield Resilience Academy study, which will demonstrate outcomes with locals' perceptions, attitudes, and behaviors around flooding and flood mitigation efforts, so that they can apply those results in their local-level decision-making on flood mitigation.
