Crisfield Nature-Based Strategies Research - Technical Working Group 4

On this page:

  • Overview
  • Downloads
This interactive technical working group meeting with local, state, federal partners applies a cooperative federalism approach to helping the community of Crisfield, Maryland, review the first set of results of storm modeling assessing the ability of the nature-based strategies co-developed with the community to attenuate water levels from storms approaching Crisfield.  Nature-based strategies selected by the community include marsh restoration, sand dune restoration, artificial oyster reef creation and living breakwaters.  Storm modeling used the Delft3D model to estimate water currents, storm surge, and wave heights from a simulated one-in-50-year storm to predict water level reductions attributable to different types of natural infrastructure interventions.

Impact/Purpose

The Technical Working Group is a vital research co-development component of this cooperative federalism approach to community environmental problem-solving.  Local experts with knowledge of the community needs and conditions, natural resource distributions and desired benefits, and capabilities of natural infrastructure convene to review the first batch of modeling results estimating the storm surge and wave attenuation capabilities of the nature-based strategies selected by the Crisfield community for assessment.
