Dataset used in study of estuarine habitat utilization by migrating salmon smolts

The accompanying database contains the data associated with an EPA funded study of the migratory behavior of salmonid smolts in Oregon’s Yaquina and Alsea estuaries. Acoustic transmitters were inserting into the body cavity of smolts, and arrays of acoustic receivers that were deployed along the estuary tracked the movements of the smolts.

Impact/Purpose

Salmonids - members of the genera Onchorhyncus and Salmo - are arguably the most societally valued fishery species in the Pacific Northwest. Hence the precipitous decline of salmonid Evolutionary Significant Units (ESUs) and the subsequent listing of various ESUs under the Endangered Species Act has garnered considerable attention along with calls for research and restoration efforts to mitigate or reverse this decline. This project studied the movements and mortality of salmon during this critical part of their life history.
