Data for the Big Spring Run Restoration Study

On this page:

  • Overview
  • Downloads
This subproduct is composed of the analytical data obtained from a study of sediment restoration at Big Spring Run in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Impact/Purpose

Excess sediments and anthropogenic nutrients, especially nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P), are leading cause of water quality impairment in streams and wetlands throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region of the US. Legacy sediments, deposited as a function of historic mill dam construction, may contribute significantly to the sediment and nutrient load of streams and waterways. In addition, the accumulation of legacy sediments in valley bottoms has buried extensive Holocene wetlands, and substantially altered the hydrology of entire watersheds.
