Practical Experience in Using Research Data

Scientific data from diverse research contexts (e.g., academia, industry) provide valuable evidence for chemical safety assessments. However, the inherent variability of this non-standardized data presents significant hurdles for its consistent regulatory application, despite the acknowledged need to consider "all scientific evidence" for decision making.
Addressing the need for better use of diverse research, an OECD expert group led by the U.S. EPA and JRC are developing OECD Harmonized Templates for research data as an implementation of OECD Guidance Document on the Generation, Reporting, and Use of Research Data for Regulatory Assessment to optimize research data's life cycle from generation to regulatory consideration. This presentation showcases how research data are used in an assessment workflow, from data discovery to evaluation of reliability. Students at the JRC Summer School on Non-Animal Approaches in Science will explore how critical and important reporting elements are needed to enhance data discovery and usability. Through real-world examples of research data integration in regulatory workflows, this presentation highlights good practices and key reporting elements. Failure to include these details hinders data discovery and compromises study reliability, ultimately undermining overall study confidence.
